"Everyman" Goofy
MEDIUM: Original Photostat Model Sheet
IMAGE SIZE: 17" x 12.75"
YEAR: c. late 1940s - early 1950s
SKU: CCV3841
SPECIAL NOTES: This model sheet highlights a series of multiple designs for Goofy. He is drawn in a distinct art style that dates from 1949 to 1952, characterized by smaller eyes and buck teeth. During this time period, Goofy was sometimes referred to as "George Geef," an everyman archetype. The embedded note "OK JACK KINNEY" refers to the primary director of the Goofy animated shorts from 1940 to 1953. Kinney was also a veteran Disney animator and story director who was awarded a Winsor McCay Award in 1983 in recognition for his lifetime contributions to animation.
A small square of Goofy's face in the upper right corner has been cut out of this model sheet, likely for an unknown production use. "RETURN TO ANIMATION RESEARCH" has been hand-stamped on the back.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: Photostat Model Sheets are reference guides used by animators to ensure consistency in character design, proportions, and expressions throughout a film. These printed sheets typically feature multiple poses, facial expressions, and turnarounds of a character, often photocopied from finalized drawings by lead animators. Model sheets help maintain uniformity in animation by providing a standard reference for all artists working on a character, preventing visual discrepancies between different scenes.

ABOUT:
Tom Everhart is a celebrated American painter whose work uniquely bridges the worlds of fine art and popular culture through his exclusive use of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters. Initially trained at Yale School of Art and later mentored by Schulz himself, Everhart transitioned from traditional illustration and architectural rendering to a bold, expressive painting style after a life-altering battle with cancer in the late 1980s.
"The "Posing" series did grow out of the previous "Hide and Seek" series that focused on the questions of one's attempt to hide their intellectual honesty in order to seek out a newly designed image... a "Poser" tsunami of posturing between who was being real, and who was obviously pretending to be real, often with the intent to deceive, could no longer be ignored." - Tom Everhart
