ABOUT THE ARTIST: Fred Moore was an artist and animator for Walt Disney Animation Studios and is often credited as one of the studio's best. Despite limited formal art training, he rose to prominence at Disney very quickly in the early 1930s, due to his great natural talent and the tremendous appeal of his drawings. Moore helped design and animate the seven dwarfs, redesigned Mickey for his role as the sorcerer's apprentice in Fantasia, and animated characters like Lampwick, Timothy Q. Mouse, the White Rabbit, and the mermaids in Peter Pan.
ABOUT THE IMAGE: Premiering in theaters on 2/7/1942, Mickey's Birthday Party was a sort-of remake of The Birthday Party from 1931 where Minnie and all of Mickey's friends throw him a surprise party. You can see Fred Moore's animation expertise in this full figure drawing, created in preparation for Mickey's dance in the short. The sequence starts at about 2:32 where the mouse, as stylish as ever with his hat and cane, cuts a rug in his living room.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: Original Production Drawings are one-of-a-kind pieces of art that were used in the creation of an animated film or television show. Each has been hand-drawn by a studio artist.
