Dopey
MEDIUM: Original Model Sheet Drawings, Graphite
IMAGE SIZE: 12" x 10"
PRODUCTION: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937
SKU: CCV3572
ABOUT THE IMAGE: The animators working on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had a seemingly impossible task ahead of them, and one of the many challenges on the film was keeping the hand-drawn characters consistent when drawn by so many artists. Practice model sheets like this were used by the artists to practice their assigned character, drawing them in different poses and perspectives. They would even practice the animation for certain scenes, as you can see in this 12 field 5-peghole practice model sheet of Dopey. This loveable, fan-favorite dwarf stole the show without saying a word! He was animated by a group of well-known Disney artists including Fred Moore, Vladimir Tytla, Frank Thomas, Shamus Culhane, Les Clark, Ollie Johnston, and Art Babbitt. This practice model sheet features four magnificent poses of the dwarf created for the scene at 22:25 when he grabs two diamonds to place over his eyes.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: A model sheet shows each character from various angles and with different expressions. Since a number of animators work on a single cartoon, the model sheet ensures that a consistent look is maintained throughout the production.

ABOUT:
Tom Everhart is a celebrated American painter whose work uniquely bridges the worlds of fine art and popular culture through his exclusive use of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters. Initially trained at Yale School of Art and later mentored by Schulz himself, Everhart transitioned from traditional illustration and architectural rendering to a bold, expressive painting style after a life-altering battle with cancer in the late 1980s.
"The "Posing" series did grow out of the previous "Hide and Seek" series that focused on the questions of one's attempt to hide their intellectual honesty in order to seek out a newly designed image... a "Poser" tsunami of posturing between who was being real, and who was obviously pretending to be real, often with the intent to deceive, could no longer be ignored." - Tom Everhart
